Here are two examples of soldiers that would have fought during the War of 1812. The soldier on the left is an example of the militia. His equipment would have been mostly supplied by himself and would have been chosen for its functionality. The flintlock musket is an example of a homemade long rifle, this particular model has a history taking it back to its use in both the War of 1812 and even the American Revolution. The soldier on the right is an example of a United States Regular infantry soldier. The equipment carried by this soldier would have been issued at the expense of the government. The rifle carried by this soldier is an 1803 Harper's Ferry flintlock musket. This was the standard issue musket of the time. This exhibit is currently on display at the Illinois State Military Museum.
